The Sallie Mae Fund and Sallie Mae Employees Give $26,000 to Help Fellow Hoosiers Affected by Tornado

FISHERS, Ind., March 29, 2012 — In response to the devastating tornado that hit southern Indiana and severely damaged Henryville's three schools, Sallie Mae employees and The Sallie Mae Fund raised more than $26,000 to assist in the rebuilding efforts.

Employees who work in Sallie Mae's Indianapolis and Fishers, Ind., offices raised $16,000 within four business days. The funds were contributed to the American Red Cross.

Additionally, The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by the company, will make a $10,000 grant to the West Clark Community Schools to help the three schools in Henryville replenish school supplies.

"The employees at this company are committed to our community, and we wanted to help our fellow Hoosiers impacted by the tornado," said Jon Kroehler, senior vice president and head of Sallie Mae's Fishers center. "This is the quickest fundraiser we’ve ever organized. As soon as the tornado happened, employees immediately began pledging support."

Employees also brought in school supplies which will be donated once schools reopen or are relocated to other buildings. School administrators said they hoped to have students back in class by April.
