Local golf tournament raises more than $120,000 to boost technology in Fairfax County Schools

RESTON, Va., May 13, 2002—Local business leaders and representatives from some of the region's leading corporations came together in Potomac Falls, Va. today for the fourteenth annual Education Foundation and Sallie Mae Fund Golf Invitational. The invitational was started in 1988 to boost the technological resources available to students in the Fairfax County public school system. The event, which raised more than $120,000, is sponsored by The Sallie Mae Fund, the philanthropic arm of Sallie Mae, the nation's leading provider of education funding.

"Sallie Mae has been a key supporter of this tournament from the very beginning," said Marty Irving, chairman, Fairfax County Public Schools Education Foundation. "Partnering with The Sallie Mae Fund for this event will enable us to help fortify the technological resources available in the county's schools today and work to ensure an outstanding educational experience for all Fairfax County students."

Representatives from forty Washington D.C. area corporations joined others from North Carolina, Illinois and New York, each donating several thousand dollars to the Education Foundation.

"We are extremely proud to work with the Education Foundation to help provide local schools with the technological resources they need to help their students thrive," said Albert L. Lord, vice chairman and chief executive officer, Sallie Mae. "Our philanthropic mission is to increase access to higher education for America's children. Through the Education Foundation's efforts we hope more students will succeed academically and be able to realize their education dreams."

The Fairfax County Public Schools Education Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation, whose mission is to improve the county's public schools. Established in 1983, the Education Foundation has become a leader in the field of public/private partnerships between corporate leaders and the public schools. The Fairfax Education Foundation was founded at the request of then Fairfax
County superintendent, William Burkholder. Burkholder requested the assistance of the local business and industry community with the development of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Since that time, the Education Foundation has grown considerably and now includes thirty-five local, national and multinational companies on its Board of Trustees. By partnering with business and industry leaders, the Foundation seeks to ensure that every student has the technological edge they need in order to succeed.
