The Sallie Mae Fund, VFIC announce scholarships for local college students
Lynchburg, Va., Dec. 10, 2003—The Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) along with The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae, today announced that 15 students at VFIC-member institutions have been awarded The Sallie Mae Fund Scholarships.
The following Virginia college students with financial need have been awarded $1,000 scholarships for their dedication to their academics and their communities:

- Megan Southworth ( Emory & Henry College )
- Matthew T. Waring ( Hampden-Sydney College )
- Abigail Kiss ( Hollins University )
- Brandon W. Loving ( Lynchburg College )
- Mary Margaret Jacobs ( Mary Baldwin College )
- Reena H. Seo ( Marymount University )
- Sarah Ricke ( Randolph-Macon College )
- Kimberly M. McDonald (Randolph-Macon Woman's College)
- Amanda Carson ( Roanoke College )
- Brooke Lewis ( Shenandoah University )
- Monique Sample ( Sweet Briar College )
- Lolita Martucci ( University of Richmond )
- Matthew S. Llufrio ( Virginia Wesleyan College )
- Erik Alexander Kiewiet De Jonge ( Washington and Lee University)
Ned Moore, president, VFIC, said, "We appreciate the lead that The Sallie Mae Fund has taken to recognize VFIC students for their outstanding commitment to academics, as well as their involvement on their campuses and throughout their communities."

The VFIC scholarships are part of Project Access, The Fund's three-year, $15 million community-based initiative designed to address three key barriers to higher education: awareness of financial aid, academic performance and financial need.
