The Sallie Mae Fund to host five Paying for College workshops as part of financial aid awareness initiative with Gov. Warner

Free information and resources for students, families

RESTON, Va., Mar. 18, 2005—The Sallie Mae Fund announced today that it will host five Paying for College workshops to help Virginian families plan and pay for college. Governor Mark Warner (D—VA) will serve as honorary chair of the series of workshops.

"'Education for a Lifetime' includes educating Virginia's families about how to pay for college," said Governor Warner. "I am pleased to join with The Sallie Mae Fund in their effort to help Virginians learn about the many financial aid resources that are available to help make the dream of college a reality."

The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae, will award a $1,000 college scholarship to one participant at each Paying for College workshop.

"Research by The Sallie Mae Fund has shown that awareness of financial aid information is key to a young person's decision to attend college," said Kathleen deLaski, president of The Sallie Mae Fund. "We are thrilled to be working with the Governor to help many more Virginians achieve their higher education aspirations."

Students and their families will learn about the benefits of continuing an education beyond high school, the affordability of college through various types of financial aid (i.e., grants, scholarships, and loans), and resources available to help families prepare for the college admissions and financial aid process.

The free workshops will be held in cities across Virginia:

  • March 23—Thomas Jefferson High School, Richmond, Va.
  • April 5—Martinsville High School, Martinsville, Va.
  • April 5—Washington-Lee High School, Arlington, Va. (English with simultaneous Spanish interpretation)
  • April 16—Lake Taylor High School, Norfolk, Va.
  • April 16—George Wythe High School, Wytheville, Va.

Individuals interested in attending should RSVP by calling (toll-free) (877) 840-8224 or register online at www.salliemaefund.org. Seating is limited.
