Deadline approaching: Applications for "Last Dollar" scholarships from The Sallie Mae Fund are due by May 31

RESTON, Va., May 3, 2006—May 31 is the deadline to apply for The Sallie Mae Fund's Unmet Need Scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year. Students are encouraged to apply online at www.salliemaefund.org before time runs out.

The largest of The Sallie Mae Fund's scholarship programs, the Unmet Need Scholarship Program was created to provide a "last-dollar" resource for families with a combined income of less than $30,000. The program is intended to supplement financial aid packages that fall more than $1,000 short of students' financial needs, but is not designed as a substitute for aid provided by their institutions.

The program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are accepted or enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at approved, accredited institutions. Students must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible to apply. Recipients will be selected based on financial need—a total of $1 million in scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $3,800.

The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae, achieves its mission—to increase access to a post–secondary education for America's students—by supporting programs and initiatives that help open doors to higher education, prepare families for their investment, and bridge the gap when no one else can.
