Winter 2008 Access Report
New College Savings Resource Available
The earlier families begin saving for their child’s college education, the better.
In reality, however, while nine out of 10 parents of middle school children expect them to go to college, fewer than four actually have started saving, according to the Institute for Higher Education Policy’s report, From Aspirations to Action: The Role of Middle School Parents in Making the Dream of College a Reality (PDF, 400KB).
To help families with their college-savings strategies, The Sallie Mae Fund has developed a free resource titled Saving for College: What You Can Do Today to Cover Your College Costs (PDF, 3.6MB). The content includes helpful tips on saving for college; charts depicting average annual income by education level; and information on various types of college savings options, including 529 college savings plans, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts, and U.S. savings bonds.
This website has more information on planning and paying for college, as well as scholarship applications from The Sallie Mae Fund and access to scholarship searches.
