Opportunities for Philadelphia students

To help level the playing field for lower-income Philadelphia families, The Sallie Mae Fund is supporting the College Opportunity Resources for Education (CORE) Philadelphia Scholarship Program for a second year. The Fund's $300,000 grant will underwrite the administrative costs of the program.

CORE Philly, an initiative developed by Congressman Chaka Fattah, Mayor John F. Street and Mr. Paul Vallas, CEO of the School District of Philadelphia, awarded $5 million last year to help nearly 2,000 Philadelphia students attend college. The program is designed to provide last-dollar awards to help needy Philadelphia college-bound students secure a higher education.

This year, eligibility has been widened to include high school seniors in the school district of Philadelphia, as well as in charter, parochial or private schools, who are pursuing an associate's or bachelor's degree at the Community College of Philadelphia, a Pennsylvania public college or university in the state system of higher education or a Pennsylvania state-related university.

CORE Philly scholarships applications are available at www.corephilly.org.
