Sallie Mae 10K raises $200,000 for students in the nation's capital

More than 1,200 runners and walkers participated in the 22nd annual Sallie Mae 10K on April 17, 2005 in Washington, D.C. All the proceeds from the race were donated to the D.C. College Access Program (DC-CAP), a non-profit organization that provides college scholarships and helps local high school students plan and prepare for higher education.
The Sallie Mae Fund has raised more than $1.1 million for DC-CAP through sponsorships and race proceeds since 2000 alone. When DC-CAP began operations in 1999, fewer than 55 percent of D.C.'s public high school freshmen were earning a high school diploma, and only one third were pursuing any type of post-secondary education. Today, 64 percent of D.C. public high school students are enrolling in college. By providing counseling and financial aid assistance for the thousands of students who might otherwise never have the chance to attend college, DC-CAP is helping change the lives of countless young adults in the nation's capital.
