Scholarships to help Latino students transfer from community college to four-year degree programs
A new program through The Sallie Mae Fund, in partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, is designed to encourage more Latino community college students to transfer to a four-year degree program. Eligible Latino community college graduates will receive scholarship awards of up to $2,500 to assist them with their transfer to a four-year degree program. Scholarship applications for the 2006–2007 academic year will be available in the fall of 2005.
Community college students now constitute 44% of all undergraduates and Latinos are the fastest growing community college population. Yet, the transfer rate from community colleges to four-year programs for Latinos is half that of Caucasians, and Latino degree attainment at two-year and four-year programs lags behind the general population.
