$1 Million State Access Initiatives
The Sallie Mae Fund has selected key states to engage in deeper college awareness campaigns and program support. States are chosen based on low-income and minority demographics, as well as partnership opportunities with government and higher education institutions.
Focus groups with college access experts in several states have revealed a particular need for middle school awareness programs, such as Kids2College, that expose sixth graders to the possibility of higher education and its relevance to their future.
The states selected are California, Florida and Texas.
The Sallie Mae Fund has pledged $1 million in each state to support programs that help close the college enrollment gap. Access initiatives include:
- Expansion of the Paying for College Bus Tour statewide
- Partnership with universities and community-based organizations on K2C early awareness program
- Scholarships for low-income and minority students
- Distribution of free educational materials to high school guidance counselors and college financial aid offices
- Broadcast media partnerships with state officials and celebrities
